At MIT, our philosophy is that paying for college is the responsibility of a student and their family to the extent that they are able, and our role is to assess and meet their demonstrated need so they can afford to attend.
A lot of time and effort goes into reviewing an undergraduate financial aid application. We need to thoroughly understand your family’s financial situation in order to assess need and award aid equitably.
Here is some basic information about what we are looking at when we review a financial aid application.
Need analysis is more of an art than a science and reasonable people will disagree on some need analysis practices. However, our goal remains a constant: to construct a well-founded measure of ability to pay, regardless of the availability of resources, so that our financial aid can meet your full need and allow you to afford to attend MIT.

We need to thoroughly understand your family’s financial situation in order to assess need and award aid equitably.
Our scholarships are awarded based solely on financial need and come from our endowment, gifts from MIT alumni and friends, and MIT general funds. 60% of our undergraduates receive MIT Scholarships. The average grant was $50,483.
If you are awarded an MIT Scholarship, we will ask you to fill out an annual Student Information Review Form so that we can match you with the right scholarship from the right donor. Our scholarship donors often take an interest in learning about the recipients, so we may also ask you to write to your donor and thank them for their support.
When your financial aid application is due depends on whether you are a prospective student applying for Early or Regular Action, or are a continuing student.
There are three documents that we use to assess applications for need-based aid:
