At MIT, our philosophy is that paying for college is the responsibility of a student and their family to the extent that they are able, and our role is to assess and meet their demonstrated need so they can afford to attend.

A lot of time and effort goes into reviewing an undergraduate financial aid application. We need to thoroughly understand your family’s financial situation in order to assess need and award aid equitably.

Here is some basic information about what we are looking at when we review a financial aid application.

Factors used to calculate your aid

  • Number of people in the family
  • Number of children currently attending college as an undergraduate
  • Permanent residence
  • Total parent income from all sources, whether taxed or untaxed
  • Taxes paid
  • Unreimbursed medical expenses
  • Private school tuition for younger siblings
  • Total assets01

Factors not in the calculation but considered

  • How your parents have prepared so far02   for retirement
  • Equity in your primary residence
  • Monthly mortgage payment or rent, if any
  • Financial support given to grandparents or other relatives
  • Any other compulsory financial obligations, whether one-time or ongoing

Need analysis is more of an art than a science and reasonable people will disagree on some need analysis practices. However, our goal remains a constant: to construct a well-founded measure of ability to pay, regardless of the availability of resources, so that our financial aid can meet your full need and allow you to afford to attend MIT.

Квота:

We need to thoroughly understand your family’s financial situation in order to assess need and award aid equitably.

Our scholarships are awarded based solely on financial need and come from our endowment, gifts from MIT alumni and friends, and MIT general funds. 60% of our undergraduates receive MIT Scholarships. The average grant was $50,483.

If you are awarded an MIT Scholarship, we will ask you to fill out an annual Student Information Review Form so that we can match you with the right scholarship from the right donor. Our scholarship donors often take an interest in learning about the recipients, so we may also ask you to write to your donor and thank them for their support.

Application deadlines

When your financial aid application is due depends on whether you are a prospective student applying for Early or Regular Action, or are a continuing student.

  • Continuing students: The financial aid application deadline for the following academic year is April 15. You will receive your award in late May or early June.
  • Early Action applicants: The application deadline is November 30. Awards are released in mid-January.
  • Regular Action applicants: The application deadline is February 15. Awards are released in mid-March.

Required documents

There are three documents that we use to assess applications for need-based aid:

  1. All financial aid applicants must submit the CSS Profile
  2. All financial aid applicants must submit their parents’ tax returns. If you are a U.S. veteran, this is not required.01
  3. All U.S. citizens and permanent residents must complete the FAFSA

CSS Profile. What you need

  • For the 2019–2020 application, you need your parents’ 2017 income tax returns or wage statements, other records of money earned, bank statements, records of investments, and records of untaxed income.
  • Some students of certain incomes are able to have the fees waived by the College Board. MIT is not able to offer a fee waiver directly.

Good to know

  • Designate MIT as one of your recipients by using our CSS code 3514 and answer all supplemental questions specific to MIT.
  • If your parents are separated or divorced, each parent will need to complete their own CSS Profile application. To keep their financial information private, your parents should not share their College Board login credentials with each other.
