Scholarships in New Zealand

Tuition fees and cost of living in New Zealand may be quite high for international students. However, they could always apply for scholarships, which are provided by the government of New Zealand or by universities themselves. However, the government scholarship programs are usually limited to certain countries (typically ASEAN or Pacific region), while it may be more difficult for the citizens of other countries to find an appropriate scholarship.

For example, New Zealand Pacific Scholarship are available for both undergraduate and postgraduate students who live in one of eligible countries: Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu. This scholarship provides full tuition fee waiver as well as monthly stipend.

New Zealand ASEAN Scholar Award was created for postgraduate students from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand or Viet Nam who want to obtain a Master or PhD degree (as well as Postgraduate Certificate of Diploma) in New Zealand.

New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships have no national restrictions: citizens of any country in the world could apply for it. The scholarship cover tuition fee for Doctoral programs in any of 8 universities in New Zealand and provide a monthly allowance. Applicants should have high academic records (at minimum GPA is 3,7 out of 4), as well as to be already admitted to PhD program in new Zealand. Successful candidates must propose a research that has a direct positive effect on economy of New Zealand (business development, international trade etc.) or on health and safety of the population of the country.

Universities in New Zealand also offer scholarships for international students. They typically don't have any national restrictions, but do not provide a full tuition waiver. It also should be noted that it's usually easier to get a scholarship for Master or Doctoral studies.
